Does what you want come from a place of purpose or ego?

Writer's picture: Mariam BoylesMariam Boyles

What is it that we get from wanting? Is there some kind of deep satisfaction that arises? Do we get this feeling only when we get what we want or is it solely from dreaming or talking about it? Are we capable of being completely satisfied with what we have in the present moment? We are when we are able to separate ourselves from the ego.

When we have something new, we tend to want to show it off, right? We want everyone to see it and give us compliments or praise. This feeds the ego and keeps us a slave to consuming. "Look what I have and you don't." It feels like preschool all over again. We show it off as much as we possibly can until that shiny new feeling wears off, until others stop talking about it, or until we find the next thing we can show off. If we can be happy with something even if no one knows about it, then we are moving from the soul instead of the ego.

Think of all of the amazing things or people that you have in your life right at this moment. What do you love about them? How long do you believe that you are capable of going without desiring something new? Are you able to love your life even if you don't have everything that you want? What is it that drives these desires? What do you feel they will bring into your life that you don't already possess? Will they make you more desirable, bring you more acknowledgment, allow you more freedom, allow you to accomplish a goal, etc? Do you feel receiving them will help the greater good or is it just coming from a selfish need? Perhaps this desire isn't even coming from you, but a place of conditioning or a compromise to make someone else happy.

We must ask ourselves why. What is the meaning behind our desires? This will tell you a lot about yourself. That is, what we are truly after in order to uncover who we really are. Years of conditioning and outside influence has shaped us into something our souls don't recognize. This leads to anxiety, depression, and just that undeniable feeling that this just isn't how life is supposed to be. We know we are meant for more. A very small percentage of us were actually allowed to be ourselves, to be free, able to be openly creative, to be able to explore without restrictions, to be weird and discover our divine gifts. The rest of us have been stifled and molded into something that we simply cannot be.

We are here to live as our true selves, to bring to the world a special touch that could only come from us being absolutely authentic and unique. So, start questioning your beliefs, your goals, and your desires to make sure that they truly are in alignment with your soul and that they serve a purpose that you actually believe in.

There is only one you. Be true to yourself. Your soul will reject you living any other way.
